The team

Dr Peter Martin is an academic and chemical engineer in the Department of Engineering Science, University of Oxford. He has a First Class Honours degree in engineering from Oxford, and a PhD from the University of Cambridge. His research has contributed new knowledge in fields ranging from the flow of soft solids to the production of biosurfactants, contributing to solving industrial problems such as controlling the bubbles in bread and efficiently transporting coal in pipelines.

Aside from his academic research and teaching activities, Peter has a keen interest in public engagement in both educational and engineering affairs. He held a Royal Academy of Engineering grant to research health and safety in Ghanaian industry; he has worked as Researcher in Residence (1999-2000) at the Purse School, Cambridge, organised the 'Feminising Knowledge' at Culture Wars: Dumbing Down, Wising Up? in 1999, and 'What does sustainability mean for the developing world?' at the Battle of Ideas in 2006.

Savita Custead is a project manager, facilitator and event manager for a range of initiatives across the UK. She has a MSc. in Science Communication and when not managing engaging cogs she is the Director of the Bristol Natural History Consortium.

Savita has worked on a number of dialogue projects as a project officer for Ecsite-uk: the network of science centres and museums, and is on the Board of Directors for The Institute of Cultural Affairs. She has managed a series of arts, intercultural and participation projects, and is currently a member of the Cardiff based Creative Collective, a consortium of project professionals.

Timandra Harkness is a science writer and event producer. As well as engaging cogs she is Director of FameLab, Cheltenham Science Festival's search for new talent in Science Communication. She also produces and hosts public science events for Cheltenham Science Festival, the B.A., the Dana Centre, O2 in association with spiked, and the Institute of Ideas. She is a member of Cheltenham Science Festival's Advisory Panel, and of the Association of British Science Writers. She was also press officer for Culture Wars, a major event at Riverside Studios in 1999 that generated discussion throughout the media.

Other science communication work includes writing scripts and text for interactive exhibitions (Science Projects), writing public papers on science issues (Royal Society) and writing and performing Science Comedy for adult audiences with the Comedy Research Project.
